Fresh and tender sea bream sashimi ~ Ehime local cuisine 五志喜
For lunch, we enjoyed sea bream dishes from Ehime Prefecture, known for its abundant sea bream. 五志喜 has a history of 380 years since its founding—truly a super centenarian old shop—yet it maintains a simple, rustic charm and is well preserved.
Inside on the first floor walls, there are many handwritten messages for 五志喜, each protected and sealed in bags, well preserved.
Another area specializes in the shop’s handmade five-color somen noodles, Ehime’s famous orange drinks, souvenirs, and more.
The paper sliding doors also feature calligraphy, giving it an elegant touch.
As soon as we sat down, the dishes started arriving one after another.
This large plate of sea bream sashimi is sliced thin and tender, with a fresh, delicate texture—super fresh.
The staff taught us to add raw egg yolk into the dipping sauce and mix it in; this is a popular way of eating among Japanese people.
Their famous sea bream somen noodles are excellent. We tried the five-color somen, though we only got one color; downstairs they sell several colors, each said to have a different flavor.
The set meal includes not only the noodles but also rice—plenty of carbs—plus the local specialty fried item “雜魚天,” a type of fried fish cake made from local fish ground with bones and skin. It’s quite tasty, and we left feeling very full.
After finishing our meal and waiting for the car outside, a friend went to buy some apple candy—it was incredibly delicious, the perfect post-meal dessert.
