On our Nantou Sun Moon Lake day trip, we detoured to Shuili Snake Kiln Pottery Cultural Park. After strolling around, we got a bit hungry. Since we were already in Shuili, we decided to try the area's most famous snack — meatball!
Our original plan was to visit the well-known 「Dongjia Rou Yuan」, but when we arrived full of anticipation, all three brother shops were already closed.
But that's okay — travel surprises often lead to delicious discoveries! We immediately searched on our phones and found 「Shuili Zhang Rou Yuan」 nearby. Without hesitation, we changed course to give it a try!
Shuili Zhang Rou Yuan is located on Minquan Road in Shuili, right on a bustling street surrounded mostly by local residences and shops, not far from Shuili Train Station.
If you're driving through Sun Moon Lake, Shuili Snake Kiln, or Checheng like us, it's very convenient to stop by for a snack or meal.

The shop exterior has a very down-to-earth, old-school snack stall vibe. A large oil pot sits on the stainless steel counter out front, with round meatballs gently simmering in warm oil. Just watching makes your mouth water!
The interior is simple and clean without flashy decor. The menu is clear: besides the signature meatballs, there are also pork soup, minced pork rice/dry noodles, rice vermicelli, flat noodles, and various soups and side dishes — all at affordable prices!

Signature Meatball (NT$40 each)
Each meatball costs NT$40 and is served drizzled with the southern and central Taiwan classic 「special white sauce」 (rice sauce) and savory gravy.
Spice lovers should definitely add their chili sauce! The mild heat elevates the sweetness of the white sauce and the bouncy texture of the skin to another level — making it even more flavorful and satisfying!
The skin is fried at just the right low temperature — chewy and springy without feeling greasy or tough. The filling mainly features firm lean pork chunks paired with crisp bamboo shoots. The pork is well-marinated, and the bamboo shoots add a refreshing sweetness, creating a layered bite.
Assorted Soup (NT$20)
The NT$20 assorted soup offers great value! You get tofu, fried tofu, and fish balls in one bowl. The broth is light and sweet, perfectly complementing the savory meatballs to cut the richness.
Four Herbs Soup (NT$40)
The Four Herbs Soup contains tender small intestines and barley simmered until soft, with a mild medicinal aroma. It pairs perfectly with the meatballs, especially after a full day of travel — a warm bowl feels especially comforting.
Besides meatballs, Shuili also offers great nearby attractions worth visiting.
🏞️ Shuili Snake Kiln Pottery Cultural Park
We visited the Snake Kiln first. The park preserves Taiwan's rare wood-fired snake kiln and offers pottery-making experiences, making it a great spot for family trips.
🏞️ Checheng Station
Known as the "Most Beautiful Mountain Town Station," Checheng is a popular Nantou attraction. Its wooden architecture, railway charm, and lakeside views make it ideal for strolling and photos any day.
🏞️ Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area
A short drive from Shuili brings you to Sun Moon Lake, perfect for boat rides or cycling around the lake.
Although we missed Dongjia Rou Yuan this time, discovering Shuili Zhang Rou Yuan didn't disappoint! Affordable prices, bouncy skin, signature white sauce, and delicious cheap soups made for a very satisfying meal.
