The "War Preparation Tunnel" in Fuxing District, Taoyuan City, was once a temporary war preparation command post for national leaders, and has now been transformed into a tourist attraction combining historical memories and modern creativity.
The history of this war preparation tunnel dates back to 1963. It was built to provide then-President Chiang Kai-shek with a safe and concealed temporary command center during emergencies in the event of war. Its interior was carefully planned, featuring rooms for rest, important communication equipment, and even world maps hanging on the walls for strategic deployment. However, over time and with environmental changes, many original facilities inside the tunnel have been damaged due to long-term humidity, and the traces of history appear mottled under the erosion of years.
Today, the tunnel interior has been renovated and planned as a space to document military history, combined with the imagery of the "Beiheng Time Corridor." Through vivid 3D mural paintings, visitors can experience the atmosphere and local customs of the past up close.
The entrance to the war preparation tunnel is located beside the scenic Jiaobanshan Guest House. Simply walk down an old-fashioned stone staircase for about two minutes to reach this storied entrance.
At the entrance, there is a clear notice reminding visitors that the tunnel's lighting system will automatically turn off at 18:00 every evening. This time restriction is based on safety considerations to ensure all visitors can leave before dark and remain safe.
Upon entering the war preparation tunnel, the most eye-catching feature is the 3D stereoscopic murals. These murals can generally be divided into two major categories. In the entrance section of the tunnel, the murals mainly focus on depicting the unique cultural landscapes of Taoyuan's Fuxing District, such as the locally famous tea leaves, shiitake mushrooms, peaches, the iconic Fuxing Bridge, and vibrant indigenous culture. These images vividly showcase the natural scenery and local life of Fuxing District.
As you proceed deeper into the rear section of the tunnel, the mural themes shift to military scenes, recreating the wartime preparation atmosphere of the past. You will see the slogan "Never Forget the Battle of Ju," inspiring people to remember history; various military review and exercise scenes; and depictions of officers and soldiers living and resting in their quarters. These murals strive to authentically present a microcosm of a war preparation unit.
When reaching the exit at the other end of the tunnel, since the exact destination on the other side was uncertain, I chose to return the way I came, savoring the scenery and historical imprints along the way once more. This war preparation tunnel is not only a physical space display but also a special experience carrying historical memories and blending local culture with artistic creativity, well worth exploring and appreciating in detail.
