This Hualien trip's first stop, upon arrival we headed straight to the popular Hualien wonton shop we hadn't visited in a long time. We used to eat at 液香扁食 more often, but we have actually visited 「花蓮香扁食」 a few times as well, each leaving a good impression.
What surprised me was that business was much better than I remembered, with a long line at the door. It took quite a while from ordering to getting a seat. Fortunately, the shop has plenty of seating, the menu is relatively simple, food comes out quickly, and table turnover is fast, so the wait was worth it.
Most importantly, each bowl of wontons has many pieces and leaves you feeling full, which is why it remains a classic snack that many visitors must try in Hualien.
花蓮香扁食 is located on the bustling Zhongshan Road in downtown Hualien, not far from Hualien Train Station. It's convenient by car or scooter and a convenient stop for many travelers exploring Hualien city food spots.
There are street parking spots nearby, though finding one during peak hours may require some luck.

By the time we arrived, quite a few people were already lined up outside, including both tourists and locals picking up takeout. The interior is much more spacious than a typical snack shop, bright and clean without feeling cramped.
Although business is brisk, the main items are wontons and noodles, so service is quick and wait times aren't as long as expected.
The menu at 花蓮香扁食 is straightforward, mainly featuring three core flavors (fresh meat, fresh shrimp, chive) in soup wontons and red oil chaoshou, plus red oil spicy noodles and various side dishes.
Side dishes are in a fridge for self-service with clear uniform pricing. Just pick what you want and pay together when ordering.
Our group of two adults and two children ordered fresh meat wontons, fresh shrimp wontons, mixed wontons, red oil spicy noodles, fresh shrimp red oil chaoshou, plus chilled cucumber and dried tofu from the sides.
Each of their wontons is huge, and each bowl contains many pieces with generous portions. One bowl is usually enough to feel fully satisfied!
Chilled Cucumber & Dried Tofu
The cucumber from the fridge is well-marinated, crisp and refreshing, perfect for pairing with spicy noodles or chaoshou to cut the heat. The dried tofu is also flavorful.
Fresh Meat Wontons
If unsure what to order, fresh meat wontons are a safe choice. The shop uses Hualien warm-processed pork hind leg for the filling, with a good fat-to-lean ratio that isn't greasy and retains juiciness and sweetness.
The wonton wrappers are thin and tender, smooth to eat, and pair well with the light broth. The generous portion is most satisfying—one bowl alone provides plenty of fullness.
Fresh Shrimp Wontons
Fresh shrimp wontons are our children's favorite. Each piece contains visible shrimp with a bouncy, sweet flavor.
The shop emphasizes daily hand-peeled fresh shrimp without using rehydrated shrimp, giving a texture noticeably different from typical frozen shrimp.
Mixed Wontons
If you have trouble deciding, mixed wontons are a great option. You get all three flavors in one bowl, making it convenient for first-timers.
For those who love aromatic flavors, we highly recommend trying their chive wontons! The filling uses carefully selected chive from local Hualien small farms, finely chopped and vibrant green, paired with warm-processed pork hind leg in the ideal fat-lean ratio.
Red Oil Spicy Noodles
Besides wontons, red oil spicy noodles are also a good choice. The noodles are tossed with minced pork and red oil sauce, then topped with seaweed and green onions for a very enticing aroma.
The spice level isn't too high, focusing more on aroma than heat. Once mixed, every bite is flavorful and pairs perfectly with wonton soup.
花蓮香扁食 has no fancy decor or extravagant plating, just simple wontons made with care. The pork, shrimp, and wrappers all meet high standards, and the fresh-made, freshly cooked style keeps the texture fresh.
Revisiting 花蓮香扁食 this time, despite the wait, the quality and taste remain excellent. Real ingredients like warm-processed pork and daily peeled fresh shrimp, with thin wrappers, generous fillings, and large size, make each bowl incredibly satisfying.
Next time you visit Hualien, consider stopping by for this bowl of classic wontons full of local warmth!
