Yunlin County Linnei Township, a place that narrates stories of time, a unique attraction that blends history, art, and nature called "Linnei Paper Butterfly Ecological Landscape Park", it was originally named "Baolong Paper Factory", bearing the history of local industrial development, and has now been transformed into a resting space filled with fantastical colors.
Entering the park, the most eye-catching feature is the old pulp tanks and steel structures full of traces of time. These massive objects are now densely covered with vines, with greenery climbing wantonly through the iron gaps, weaving a scene like a fairy tale. Among them, the environmentally recycled old pulp tanks, due to their fantastical, slightly decadent yet vibrant appearance, are nicknamed "Taiwan version of Howl's Moving Castle" by younger visitors. This unique landscape is not only a popular check-in spot for photography enthusiasts but also a poetic interpretation of the coexistence of time, nature, and man-made objects, allowing people to feel the deep marks left by history in the space while appreciating it.
The predecessor of "Linnei Paper Butterfly Ecological Landscape Park" is a paper factory established during the Japanese colonial period, adding a profound cultural heritage to the park. The former industrial buildings have now been transformed into carriers of installation art, closely integrated with the local ecological landscape. For example, the large installation art "Deer and Butterflies" at the entrance uses simple hollow metal lines to outline the elegant posture of the Taiwan formosan sika deer, with lifelike butterflies perched on it, creating a scene of harmony between humans and nature. The inspiration for this work comes from the representative Formosan sika deer in Taiwan's shallow mountain areas and the unique purple-spotted butterflies in Linnei Township, showcasing Taiwan's unique ecological features while guiding viewers to reflect on the complex environmental impacts possibly brought by artificial breeding and other issues.
Besides "Deer and Butterflies", there are other imaginative art creations in the park, such as the work "Dancing Monkeys". It tells the story of a group of little monkeys imitating the dance of purple-spotted butterflies, only to be mocked by the eight-color birds and chased, accidentally falling off a cliff, and finally escaping with the help of thousands of purple-spotted butterflies, then dancing with the purple butterflies and undergoing a wonderful transformation. This allegorical story not only adds fun to the park but also deeply connects the images of local plants and animals with folk imagination.
Another space in the park with great historical value is "Linnei Station". Its predecessor is the office building of the original Mitsubishi Paper Mill, built in 1911, which has gone through periods such as Linnei Village Office, Kyudai Paper Factory, and Baolong Paper Factory. It is an important historical building witnessing the early development of Taiwan's paper industry and local economic changes. After restoration, it has been registered as a Yunlin County historical building. Its architectural style adopts the unique "Tatsuno-style" method. In the approximately 57-ping space, continuous classical arches and corridors are preserved, with an elegant style that blends European and Japanese architectural essences, exuding a timeless nostalgic atmosphere.
Linnei Station still retains the structural features of the old building, especially those arched wooden windows full of traces of time, complemented by warm yellow cylindrical lamps, creating a cozy and nostalgic atmosphere. Here, visitors can not only immerse themselves in the beauty of historical architecture but also taste various local specialty products. The store sells a wide array of agricultural products and offers unique flavored taro ice treats, exquisite simple meals, and drinks.
The meals at Linnei Station include main dishes like "Taro Vermicelli Soup", "Papaya Braised Pork Set", and "Salted Pineapple Milkfish Maw Set", all showcasing the delicacy of traditional Taiwanese cooking. For drinks, there are refreshing options like "Wax Gourd Drink" and "Starfruit Drink", as well as the tea-scented "Shilin Creek Oolong Tea", while "Taro Mixed Ice" is the perfect sweet treat for after meals or afternoon breaks, perfectly combining the fragrant and glutinous texture of taro with a cool mouthfeel.
The Salted Pineapple Milkfish Maw Set includes the main dish, rice, two side dishes, and soup. The main dish, milkfish maw, is rich in oil, tender and delicate in texture, steamed with salted pineapple and ginger shreds, offering a sweet and salty flavor with rich layers, and the sauce is perfect with rice.
Linnei Paper Butterfly Ecological Landscape Park and Linnei Station together construct a rich and diverse travel experience. Here, there are historical buildings, creative art installations, ecological landscapes coexisting with nature, and local cuisine that tantalizes the taste buds. It is not only a spot for visitors to stop and take photos, feel the nostalgic atmosphere, but also a space that allows people to deeply understand local culture and reflect on environmental conservation, worthy of savoring and exploring.
