As a Hong Konger, I really like the movie Chungking Express, especially its color style using cool-toned blue-green to create the alienation, psychedelic, and melancholic feeling of urban men and women, paired with urban neon lights and graininess, outlining the postmodern, lonely, and lost atmosphere of 1990s Hong Kong city, internalizing emotions within colors and light and shadow.
The bright green representing Takeshi Kaneshiro, the deep blue of Tony Leung Chiu-wai, and the vibrant red of Brigitte Lin leave many classic scenes with profound memories.
I tried to recreate this feeling myself. To pose in this seemingly relaxed and simple wall-squatting pose that actually makes one sweat profusely really took a lot of effort. Combined with the fill light effect, I produced a photo that can barely capture a bit of director Wong Kar-wai's color aesthetic.
