Hualien Gourmet "榕樹下麵店" Has Been Popular Locally for 50 Years! Must-Order Native Chicken and Braised Pork Leg, the Old-Time Flavor Hualien Locals Grew Up Eating!

When traveling to a place, what you most want to find is that kind of small eatery without fancy decor but full of strong local human warmth. This trip to Hualien, we found this super popular "榕樹下麵店" hidden deep in the alleys.

榕樹下麵店's location is a bit hidden. Without a local guide or prior online info, it's easy to miss even when riding or driving by!

This shop has been operating locally for over 50 years, now in its third generation. It's a favorite many Hualien locals have eaten since childhood. At mealtimes, the place is almost always full inside and out—its popularity is truly booming!

榕樹下麵店 is located in an alley off Zhonghua Road in Hualien City, next to the old Tianpu Station. Though not obvious, searching the shop name on navigation will get you there easily.

From downtown Hualien, it's just a few minutes by car. Plenty of roadside parking nearby makes driving convenient.

Besides the crowds, the most eye-catching feature is the huge old banyan tree in front. Its thick trunk and aerial roots form a natural awning and the shop's most prominent landmark. No fancy decor or trendy design—just the authentic look of a traditional noodle stall.

Red plastic chairs, simple tables, a semi-open kitchen, and the constant sound of orders create a nostalgic feeling of eating at a childhood noodle stall. We arrived at noon to a full house and sat under the banyan tree. Most customers were locals riding in to eat or take out.

Ordering is simple—just fill out the white menu. Main noodles include yi mein, rice vermicelli, oil noodles, and mi tai mu, available in soup or dry versions.

On weekends, limited braised pork rice, dry pig's blood, and various soups (pig's blood soup, liver soup, intestine soup, fish ball soup, etc.) are also available.

Cold cuts include native chicken, braised pork leg, braised large intestine, pig's tail, liver, intestine, pig's heart, pig's tongue, fresh intestine, braised pork skin, braised radish, and more. Native chicken can be ordered as front or back half.

Our family of four ordered a full table—prices are friendly even for a family meal.

Soup Mi Tai Mu

The broth is light and smooth with a subtle meaty aroma. The mi tai mu is silky yet pleasantly chewy, never mushy—simple but satisfying.

Dry Yi Mein

The noodles absorb the meat sauce beautifully, delivering savory flavor in every bite. They stay springy without being greasy.

Soup Rice Vermicelli

The fine rice vermicelli soaks up the broth's essence, carrying a gentle meaty fragrance. Light yet filling.

Native Chicken

Highly recommended. The skin is glossy golden, the meat firm and springy, never dry. Dipped in the house sauce, it highlights the chicken's natural sweetness—simple preparation lets the ingredient shine.

Braised Pork Leg

Seeing almost every neighboring table order it, we followed suit. Now we understand why—perfect fat-to-lean ratio, lean meat not tough, fatty parts gelatinous. Pairs wonderfully with noodles.

Five-Ingredient Salad

After rich meats and noodles, this refreshing salad is a must. It includes cucumber, carrot, white wood ear, black wood ear, and ginger strips—sweet-tangy and crisp. The wood ear's chew and cucumber's crunch cut through the richness perfectly.

After eating, don't rush off! Just steps from the noodle shop is the nostalgic railway-themed "Tianpu" wooden pavilion.

Once a historic station on the old Dongtuo Railway, it's now a pleasant strolling spot. The Japanese-style wooden structure, surrounded by greenery and blue sky, makes for atmospheric photos.

Hualien's 榕樹下麵店 skips flashy packaging, relying on honest flavors, generous portions, and half a century of local warmth.

If you or your family enjoy these hidden old-school eateries, make time on your next Hualien trip for a hot bowl of noodles and plates of native chicken and braised pork leg!
