On the second day of our Kyushu Fukuoka trip, we arranged to stroll slowly around Hakata city. Starting from the SG RESIDENCE INN HAKATA where we stayed, we walked all the way to the shopping area around Hakata Station, then strolled slowly to "Kushida Shrine".

Originally thinking it was just an ordinary shrine, we discovered after actually walking in that it had far more to see than imagined. In addition to the giant Yamakasa display most representative of Hakata, you can also see the Couple Ginkgo, Chikaraishi, and several small shrines. The overall worship area is not large, but every spot holds a story.

Right next to the shrine is the lively Kawabata-dori Shopping Street. After worshiping, you can also shop and enjoy delicious food, making it perfect for a half-day strolling itinerary.

Kushida Shrine is located in the old town area of Hakata and has protected Hakata for over 1,200 years as its chief guardian shrine. Locals are more accustomed to calling it "Okushida-san". It is not only a center of faith but also one of Fukuoka's important cultural symbols. The annual Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival is one of the most important traditional events in the area.

If staying near Hakata Station, strolling over like we did is also very convenient, arriving in about 15 minutes.

Passing through the tall stone torii gate, you are greeted by the tower gate with huge "shintō" lanterns hanging, simple yet majestic. Entering the Kushida Shrine courtyard, although the area is not extremely large, it is filled with highlights worth stopping for.

After entering the shrine, the first feeling is tranquility amid the bustle. Outside is clearly the lively Hakata shopping district, but once you step inside the grounds, the entire atmosphere instantly becomes quiet.

The approach is lined with greenery. Many local Japanese people come to worship, as well as travelers from around the world. Although not as grand in scale as Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto, it has more of a local living feel, making it easier to slow down and enjoy slowly.

Entering the courtyard behind the large lantern, the main focus of worship is the main building of Kushida Shrine, the "haiden". The haiden here has a simple and refined architecture, with a beautiful curved roof. A huge shimenawa hangs directly above, full of strong traditional Shinto atmosphere.

Most notably, a huge white "goshintō" hangs on each side of the haiden, with exquisite wood carvings decorating the middle. During worship, look up at the delicate carvings under the eaves and on the beams—every detail depicts the centuries-old history of protecting Hakata's old town.

When visiting Kushida Shrine, you absolutely cannot miss the giant Yamakasa displayed on the grounds. Seeing the real thing for the first time will make you stop and take photos.

The Yamakasa, over ten meters tall, is vividly colored and extremely detailed, stunning from any angle. Even outside the festival period, you can appreciate the beauty of the Yamakasa craftsmanship up close.

For first-time visitors to Fukuoka, this is also the fastest place to learn about Hakata Gion Yamakasa culture.

Another popular spot in the shrine is the Couple Ginkgo. The giant ginkgo trees stand tall within the shrine grounds and are said to symbolize marital harmony and good relationships, attracting many couples to worship.

If visiting in autumn, the sight of golden ginkgo leaves covering the ground is sure to be even more charming. Although we didn't visit during ginkgo season, we could still feel the historical presence of this old tree.

Another interesting small attraction on the grounds is the Chikaraishi. In the past, these stones were tools for testing strength, and many sumo wrestlers or strongmen would demonstrate their power by lifting them.

Although now displayed as artifacts, seeing these stones of various sizes still makes you wonder how heavy they are.

In addition to the main hall, Kushida Shrine has several small shrines you can visit along the way. Inari Shrine, Ebisu Shrine, and others attract many worshippers seeking business prosperity and safety.

If you have time, take a slow walk around and don't leave after just photographing the Yamakasa. Many small corners are actually quite unique.

After worshiping at the haiden, be sure to visit the shrine office next door to browse the "omamori" sales area.

Because Kushida Shrine is the local chief guardian, there is a rich variety of omamori, from the classic traffic safety, health, good fortune and warding off evil, to academic success—something for everything.

After worshiping, don't rush to leave. Right next to the shrine is the famous Kawabata-dori Shopping Street, with many old shops, snacks, drugstores, and specialty stores.

After worshiping, we strolled slowly through the shopping street and found some Fukuoka delicacies to fill our stomachs. Compared to large department stores, this place better conveys the living atmosphere of Hakata's old district.

If time allows, you can also combine it with Nakasu and Canal City Hakata for a half-day trip.

After actually visiting, I found Kushida Shrine far more impressive than expected. Not only does it feature Fukuoka's most representative Yamakasa display, but you can also see the thousand-year-old ginkgo, Couple Ginkgo, Chikaraishi, and various small shrines. Convenient transportation, free admission, and adjacent to Kawabata-dori Shopping Street make it very suitable for first-time independent travelers to Fukuoka to include in their itinerary.

If you also like Japanese shrine culture or want to learn more about Hakata's history, then Kushida Shrine is definitely worth spending a morning at to fully experience the charm of this shrine that has protected Hakata for over a thousand years.
