Chapter 1 • Sleeping Naked
「Bohong! Tonight the crew’s having BBQ! Someone’s treating!」The site foreman took off his dust-covered hard hat, rolling up the blueprint scroll as he shouted at me.
「What’s up! Did you hit the lottery today?」I peeled off my thick gloves and wiped the sweat streaming down my neck and chest with a towel. My safety boots crunched on the gravel-covered ground.
「No, you’re the one treating!」The foreman slapped my shoulder hard, eyes crinkling with laughter.
「No way! I don’t have money!」I quickly refused.
「Wait!!!! What do you mean????」My eyes lit up instantly, even tearing up a little as I stared at the foreman for confirmation. He looked back, eyes reddening too, and nodded.
Damn! I’m getting promoted to foreman!!!
I chose Taipei without hesitation for this application. At our company, transferring from Taichung to Taipei comes with an out-of-county allowance. Plus, Taipei has more projects and often overtime. I calculated it properly—foreman salary bracket, occasional overtime pay, case volume mentioned by Taipei friends in the group, and the northern rental subsidy—my monthly pay could be a full 1.8 times higher than now.
The site foreman has always been good to me. Probably after some drinking session he learned I was raised by grandparents, parents long gone, and just wanted to earn as much as possible. I don’t have much academic talent, but I have a strong, well-built body, so I jumped straight into construction labor in central Taiwan and have been at it for three years.
「My treat! Drinks on me!」I yelled at the top of my lungs. All the workers on site who heard cheered and clapped. Between the steel frames and scaffolding came a chorus of rough shouts: 「Damn! Bohong! Awesome!」
One week later......
Around ten at night, I dragged my exhausted but excited body back to the rental place provided by Grandma’s friend.
Taipei nights are really much more humid and stuffy than Taichung. Walking into this old apartment, the hallway lights were dim, the air carrying a faint scent of mothballs and aged wood. I pushed open the door; the room only had an old standing fan whirring in the corner, its blades making a slight 「clack-clack」 noise. No AC on, windows shut tight, the stuffy air wrapped around me like a damp towel.
Grandma said her grandson has been abroad for years, so no one lives here and there are few belongings, which is why I dared to sleep naked. Anyway, I don’t officially report to the site until noon tomorrow, so tonight I can relax properly.
I stripped off my work tank and shorts and tossed them on the chair, left only in a pair of plaid boxer briefs already soaked with sweat.
Standing in the middle of the room, I looked down at the body I’d built working on site: broad chest muscles gleaming with sweat, abs not quite a six-pack but solid and strong, two thick thighs with clear muscle lines from years of hauling heavy loads.
「Whew……so hot.」I yanked the briefs down to my ankles, kicked them to the foot of the bed, and flopped onto the bed completely naked.
The bed was big, the sheets old but freshly washed, carrying a faint sun-dried scent.
