2026 Hehuan Mountain Attractions "Shimen Mountain Trail" The Most Beginner-Friendly Taiwan Baiyue! 30 Minutes to Summit, Transportation, Parking Spots, Trailhead Info Lazy Pack!

When it comes to "Taiwan Baiyue," many people's first reaction is: Isn't it difficult? Do I need heavy gear? Do I have to climb for a long time?

But actually, there is one Taiwan Baiyue that is very beginner-friendly, almost the most entry-level of entry-level options. That is the "Shimen Mountain Trail" located in Hehuan Mountain.

Shimen Mountain, at an elevation of 3,237 meters, is one of Taiwan's Baiyue peaks, yet it is also known as the "easiest Baiyue."

The trail is approximately 784 meters long, and you can reach the summit in about 30 minutes one way. Although the distance is short and the difficulty is low, the scenery along the way and at the summit has not been compromised at all.

Shimen Mountain is located in the Hehuan Mountain area of Ren'ai Township, Nantou County. The trailhead is right beside Provincial Highway 14A at the 33.5 km mark.

In other words, you might miss it if you're driving by and not paying attention.

On the second day of our Cingjing trip in Nantou, after lunch we decided to head to Shimen Mountain. After parking, we foolishly walked toward Songxue Lodge, thinking the trailhead was nearby.

Only after walking for a while did we realize the trailhead was right beside the main road.

📍Shimen Mountain Transportation:

The most convenient way to reach Shimen Mountain is by driving yourself. You can set your navigation directly to "Shimen Mountain." The trailhead is beside Provincial Highway 14A, with limited parking space available nearby—only a few spots.

You can do as we did and park at the Hehuan Mountain parking lot or Songxue Lodge, but you'll need to walk some distance.

If taking public transportation, you can ride "Nantou Bus 6658A" (Cingjing–Wuling–Hehuan Mountain), which runs daily between Cingjing National Hotel and Hehuan Mountain. Get off at the "Shimen Mountain" stop.

Service is limited, so check the timetable in advance or reserve a spot early for priority.

The weather that day was perfect—bright sunshine, blue skies with white clouds over lush green slopes. Every shot looked like a postcard.

The Shimen Mountain Trail mostly consists of stone steps mixed with dirt and gravel paths. The slope is not steep, and most people can complete it with ease.

Although the sun was strong and bright, the wind on the mountain was also strong.

It feels hot in the sun, but the wind instantly cools you down. The high-altitude climate is very noticeable, so it's recommended to bring a light jacket—even in summer.

The views along the trail are mostly open with little shade, but because of that, the scenery is almost 360 degrees with no blind spots.

After walking for about half an hour, we stood at the summit of Shimen Mountain. That moment felt almost unbelievable—reaching a Baiyue peak so easily?

The summit offers excellent views of rolling mountain ranges stretching into the distance, with an impossibly blue sky. Although it was just a short hike, standing at over 3,000 meters truly changes your mood.

No heavy burden, yet full of a sense of accomplishment.

The reason Shimen Mountain is so popular is because it offers short distance, low difficulty, high elevation, and great scenery—perfect for hiking beginners, families with children, or anyone who wants to experience a Baiyue without too much effort.

But a reminder: mountain conditions can change quickly. Even on a short trail, don't neglect warmth, sun protection, and hydration.

This trip to Shimen Mountain left a deep impression. It's not as strenuous as high mountains requiring heavy gear, nor as ordinary as flatland trails.

It lets you experience the grandeur of high mountains without leaving you out of breath.

If you're visiting Cingjing or Hehuan Mountain and have time, we highly recommend adding Shimen Mountain to your itinerary. In just 30 minutes, you can enjoy the views of a Baiyue peak.
