In Taipei's Qingguang shopping district, there is a tiny shop with only four to six seats that often has a long line at the door—that is 哞屋 Mon wo. It doesn't follow the flashy restaurant route but turns Japanese yōshoku into a friendly street classic that keeps people coming back. Simple curry and donburi dishes stand strong here, earning a high Google rating of 4.8.
哞屋 Mon wo is special: seating is limited, with counter and window seats so few it feels like a private diner or a friend's home. Not being able to make reservations is one of its features, and the daily queue at the door is part of its charm. Many people choose takeout because of this.
Compared to some high-priced restaurants in Taipei, 哞屋 Mon wo offers good value for money in terms of price and quality.
Although the shop is small, the atmosphere is fully realized.
Many little details and decorative touches create a strong Japanese feel.
The wall art and tabletop ornaments are all so cute~
The rich, stretchy cheese is incredibly satisfying! The curry has a thick texture with plenty of onions. Dong finds the curry slightly sweet, but the flavor is rich— a hint of acidity, a touch of spice, reminiscent of homemade curry. It pairs well with the tender beef.
When you cut into the soft-boiled egg, the yolk aroma combined with the curry elevates the taste even further!
The portion might feel a little small for guys, though.
哞屋 is not a flashy restaurant; it's the kind of place that makes you want to come back for a second time right after finishing. Among Taipei's back alleys, these “lane-side eateries” are the most memorable: between high quality and friendly prices, you find a bowl that warms both your stomach and your heart—a nostalgic, home-like Japanese donburi. That feeling is pretty wonderful too.
