Nanputuo Temple was first built in the Tang Dynasty and is a Buddhist temple with over a thousand years of history. Located at the foot of Wulao Peak and facing the bay, its scale in Xiamen is second only to Tong'an Fantian Zen Temple.
Because it enshrines Guanyin Bodhisattva and is located south of Mount Putuo in Zhejiang, it is named "Nanputuo."
After entering Nanputuo Temple, the overall pace naturally slows down. There isn't much noise, and the air feels fresher. Even just wandering around makes one feel very relaxed.
Inside the temple, you can feel the exquisite Minnan architecture. The upturned eaves and rustic wooden structures make the mood unconsciously calm down.
After paying respects, don't rush to leave. Walk toward the back mountain, and you'll be amazed by the towering rock formations! Nanputuo Temple sits at the foot of Wulao Peak, with the entire mountain covered in massive granite stones. These rocks are not only natural barriers but also canvases that have borne the marks of literati over millennia.
Besides the solemn Buddhist halls, Nanputuo Temple's most attractive feature is the shimmering pond filled with many turtles of all sizes. Watching them move slowly makes time seem to slow down as well.
Additionally, flocks of sparrows eat feed while cute cats rest leisurely nearby. Their relaxed demeanor is truly healing!
Recommended Itinerary: Nanputuo Temple + Xiamen University. The entrance of Nanputuo Temple is right next to Xiamen University, making it perfect to visit together! Note that reservations are required in advance. If you also want to enter Xiamen University, remember to register successfully in advance via the WeChat Mini Program "Xiamen University Entry Reservation System."
One-Day Itinerary: After visiting Nanputuo Temple to experience the tranquility of Buddhism, step into the Xiamen University campus to feel its artistic vibe, then head to Baicheng Beach to watch the sunset, or visit Xiamen Botanical Garden. This is the perfect Xiamen-style romance!
Nanputuo Temple is a place that lets your journey "pause for a moment." After eating lots of snacks and visiting many attractions, stopping here makes the overall trip more layered.
If you're coming to Xiamen not just for food but also to take some time to quietly experience another side of the city, Nanputuo Temple is an excellent choice.
