✨It's been a long time since I went to Shoushan Zoo. My impression of Shoushan was still stuck on the animals all looking sickly. Suddenly on a whim, I thought I'd go check out the long-unseen zoo, but just getting there the roads were extremely desolate. I suspected the navigation had routed us onto a side road—besides our single car, there were only tons of wild macaques~ Super scary
✨Luckily it was daytime. When we arrived at the zoo there were surprisingly quite a few people—everyone must have taken the shuttle bus. Every scooter had a big wooden stick on it. At first I thought it was a monkey prank, but later on the way down we realized everyone had placed one themselves, to prevent wild macaques from opening the rear compartment to look for food
✨Even the warning signs outside the entrance were hilarious. They said if a monkey climbs on you, stay calm and don't fight it. Don't carry plastic bags, don't snatch food from monkeys—if they want to grab it, let them. Don't make eye contact with macaques, and don't eat while walking.
✨Actually, you can barely even drink water, because only adult macaques can tell that the water isn't good to drink, while the young ones will still snatch at anything they see.
✨As soon as we entered the grounds, the first thing we saw were the meerkats—super cute but constantly digging in the sand
✨Then there were the two alpacas, both looking completely world-weary, and their front teeth were ridiculously long.
✨There were actually quite a few animals, but the classic species all looked very skinny. Back in the day they used to be kept in pairs, but now there's only one left of each—it felt pretty sad to see.
✨The animals that seemed best cared for were probably the peacocks—at least on the day we went, several of them were showing off their tails like crazy. ✨The hippo's skin also looked great.
✨The elephant kept facing the wall, lost in thought.
✨The two tortoises were going at it like crazy.
✨The golden snub-nosed monkeys were adorable, but there was one locked inside with the saddest face—it made you feel really sorry for it. They must be so envious of the monkeys outside.
✨The red-crowned cranes were stunning, like something out of a painting.
✨The tiger looked like it already had depression—constantly pacing in circles with stereotypical behavior…..
✨Every kangaroo was tiny; we didn't see any big ones.
✨The lions were shockingly skinny—both the male and female were skin and bones……. sigh
