After enjoying lunch at 「湯城鵝行」 in 檜意森活村, while preparing to head back, we happened to spot the attraction sign for 北門驛 at the intersection. Since it was nearby, we decided to make a spontaneous detour to visit this century-old wooden station full of historical charm.
北門驛 was built in 1910 (Meiji 43). The entire structure is made from premium red cypress wood unique to Alishan and served as a key starting station for the early flatland section of the 阿里山森林鐵路. It also stands as an important witness to the development of the logging industry in Chiayi.
Back then, the area around 北門驛 was clustered with sawmills, forestry offices, and staff dormitories. It was not only a vital hub for timber transport but also a key point for residents to collect and distribute goods and for passengers to board and alight. The short street in front of the station was once a bustling marketplace filled with crowds. For these reasons, 北門驛 is still designated as a Chiayi City Historic Site.
In 1998, 北門驛 suffered fire damage. After years of restoration work, it was fully restored to its original appearance in 2004.
The restored station preserves the strong characteristics of Japanese-style wooden architecture. Using 「Forest Green」 and 「Chiayi Blue」—colors that symbolize Chiayi’s identity as a “City of Wood”—along with classic rain-screen exterior walls, the station once again displays a warm and elegant historical charm. It has become a must-photograph landmark for many travelers visiting 嘉義景點.
Currently, 北門驛 is operated by 薰衣草森林 Select. In addition to offering coffee, tea, and soft-serve ice cream, it features a tasteful space showcasing cultural and creative products.

After browsing the merchandise area, I bought a lavender-flavored soft-serve ice cream.
The subtle lavender aroma paired with the smooth ice cream texture is refreshing and not overly sweet—perfect for a hot summer day.
Next to the exhibition area is a separate rest space where visitors can sit and enjoy their desserts while soaking in the leisurely, tranquil atmosphere of the century-old station.

Wooden benches and railway facilities remain beside the platform, as if stepping back into the heyday of the 阿里山森林鐵路. The nostalgic atmosphere is very strong.
The tracks in front are also fully preserved. Many visitors take photos here—it is one of the most representative shooting angles at 北門驛.
