During our Xiamen Fuzhou trip, we arrived at one of Fuzhou's most anticipated attractions, "Sanfang Qixiang," listed as a national 5A-level scenic area. Originally thought it would just be an ordinary old street, but after walking in, we discovered it's much larger and more photogenic than imagined. The entire street is filled with an ancient atmosphere, with retro traditional architecture stretching along the way, truly giving a sense of traveling through time.
Moreover, Sanfang Qixiang is lined with delicious food, with snacks, desserts, and drink shops almost every few steps. We highly recommend strolling while eating and exploring slowly. That day, we wandered from afternoon until evening, satisfying our photography, food, and old street vibes all at once.
Sanfang Qixiang is located in Gulou District, Fuzhou. It can be said to be Fuzhou's most representative historical and cultural district, and almost a must-visit spot for independent travelers in Fuzhou. Transportation is actually very convenient—take Fuzhou Metro Line 1 or Line 4, get off at "Dongjiekou Station," and exit from Exit C right next to Sanfang Qixiang, so no need to worry about getting lost.
If you're staying in Fuzhou city like us, taking a taxi is also very convenient, and taxi fares in Fuzhou are cheap, making it even easier to get around.
Sanfang Qixiang is known as the "living fossil of the lifang system" and the "Ming-Qing architecture museum." The entire district centers on Nanhou Street, with three lanes on the west side: Yijin Lane, Wenru Lane, and Guanglu Lane; and seven alleys on the east side, including Yangqiao Lane, Langguan Lane, Ta Lane, Huang Lane, Anmin Lane, Gong Lane, and Jibi Lane, hence the name "Sanfang Qixiang."
The area still preserves a large number of Ming-Qing ancient buildings and traditional residences. There are also many former residences of historical figures within the district, such as the former residence of Shen Baozhen, Lin Juemin, and Yan Fu. Strolling around really gives a strong sense of history.
Upon entering Sanfang Qixiang, you can feel the very retro old street atmosphere. Both sides are filled with ancient-style buildings, bluestone paths paired with red lanterns and wooden doors and windows—highly photogenic both day and night.
Some alleys also feature old courtyards and traditional Min-style architecture, with every corner perfect for photos. That day, we didn't plan a strict itinerary—just strolled around, stopping at interesting shops or corners we liked to take photos. It was a very relaxing experience.
Besides the ancient architecture, there are several super popular photo spots you shouldn't miss! For example, the "Heart Tree" near Nanhou Street—a giant tree that went viral for resembling a heart. Seeing the lush green heart hanging high makes your mood feel romantic too!
Also, the local "McDonald's" and "Starbucks" have adopted a Chinese retro style to blend with the historic scenery. The aroma of coffee wafting from ancient houses creates a captivating East-meets-West aesthetic.
Sanfang Qixiang has plenty of delicious snacks, with all kinds of Fuzhou snacks, drinks, and desserts available. We highly recommend eating while strolling.
We randomly picked a drink shop and ordered a tea beverage. The cute little teapot decoration on the lid was the most adorable surprise—the delicate touch added extra joy to our simple tea time.
A must-try in Fuzhou is rouyan. This time we tried the famous "Tongli Rouyan." Fuzhou rouyan looks a bit like Taiwanese wontons, but the wrapper is thinner and more chewy, with fresh and solid meat filling.
We also tried the popular "Ye's Peanut Soup," ordering peanut soup with free-range egg, handmade taro paste, sweet glutinous rice, and refreshing lotus cake. The peanuts were cooked to a soft, chewy texture with just the right sweetness, giving it a warm, nostalgic old-school flavor.
After visiting Sanfang Qixiang, we highly recommend stopping by the nearby "Daming Food Street." It's super lively at night, with all kinds of Fujian snacks, barbecue, seafood, and desserts—more of a local night market vibe compared to Sanfang Qixiang.
This visit to Sanfang Qixiang was even more enjoyable than expected. It's not just a typical tourist old street but a place where you can truly feel Fuzhou's history and everyday life. The ancient architecture, food, shops, and alley atmosphere blend perfectly, making even a leisurely stroll very comfortable.
Plus, with convenient transportation and plenty of food options, it's ideal for independent travelers in Fuzhou to include in their itinerary, with at least half a day to explore slowly.
