Near the alleys by Taipei MRT Xiaogang Egg Station, there's a powerful local favorite alley gourmet spot Old Beijing Zhajiangmian. Though the shop is small, it's always packed during meal times, and seats inside are usually full! One bowl per person loaded with meat chunks of zhajiangmian, so satisfying!
We invited two hosts to professionally explain and introduce this D&W article

The "Old Beijing Zhajiangmian" located in Songshan District, Taipei City, opened in 2014 and has over 10 years of history, quietly standing in the alley near Xiaogang Egg. Many foodies come specifically for it. The owner brought hometown cuisine to Taiwan, allowing locals to taste the nostalgic northern noodle flavors he misses.
If you haven't tried it, the price might seem a bit high compared to regular street noodle shops, but after eating once you'll change your mind.
Indeed, the ingredients are generous, and it even feels surprisingly abundant.
This zhajiangmian looks simple, but the taste is truly extraordinary!
The rich flavor and texture are quite impressive. The fried sauce is completely different from usual, full of bean aroma! Paired with tons of pork chunks that are fragrant yet not greasy, the bean sauce is savory and thick, smooth texture, finally topped with seemingly endless free cucumber shreds that refreshingly cut the richness, making you want bite after bite nonstop.
Then there's the handmade noodles with great chewiness
that also absorb the sauce well, really satisfying to eat!
Plus those huge meat chunks, super satisfying to eat!
For Dong who loves spicy food, red oil wontons are a must-order.
With wontons here, you gotta eat them up!
Sometimes noodle shops' red oil wontons are only sour without spice, which can instantly annoy people.
But this Old Beijing Zhajiangmian's spicy wontons are super satisfying~ The Sichuan peppercorn numbing aroma really comes through! Numbing you to the point of sweating, full marks for thrill!
Plenty of meat in the wontons too, paired with the thin wonton skin, really satisfying
Looks not spicy, but once eaten it's both numbing and spicy, yet doesn't linger too long in the mouth, super satisfying! Recommended!
