On the last day of the six-day, five-night Xiamen-Fuzhou trip, we took the high-speed rail EMU from Fuzhou back to Xiamen in the morning, arriving around 11 a.m. and heading to the Zengcuoan guesthouse to drop off our luggage. In the afternoon, we visited the Zengcuoan food district, sampling local snacks like double-skin milk sweet soup, canned eggs, and meat pies along the way.
In the evening, we went shopping at Wanxiang City, a popular Xiamen mall, and unexpectedly discovered the well-reviewed "Zao Xiang Kou Clay Pot Potato Noodles." What started as a simple dinner turned into a delight thanks to the rich sesame sauce broth, paired with fried pork tenderloin and grilled rice cakes for a super satisfying meal!

The surrounding area is lively, with restaurants, snacks, and shopping centers everywhere, popular among locals and tourists alike.

Take the subway to "Hubin East Road Station," then walk.
Or simply take a taxi for the quickest option. During our days traveling in Xiamen and Fuzhou, we mostly used taxis to get around.

Inside the store, the atmosphere is clean and bright with smooth flow, though not luxurious. The highlight is the semi-open kitchen counter, where rows of black clay pots simmer on the stove, releasing fragrant sesame sauce and broth aromas that make your stomach rumble as soon as you sit down.

For the two of us, we ordered one bowl of potato noodles, one bowl of rice noodles, plus several popular snacks, tofu pudding, and drinks.
Trying authentic potato noodles for the first time was a real surprise. They look semi-transparent, feel incredibly smooth, and have outstanding Q-elastic texture! It's rare to find such springy, broth-absorbing potato noodles in Taiwan—the mouthfeel is excellent.
Even more impressive is the sesame sauce broth, where the rich sesame aroma blends perfectly with the soup base. It's fragrant yet not overly heavy, pairing wonderfully with the broth-soaked noodles. Fans of sesame sauce noodles or tahini flavors will love it.
Strongly recommend the oil stick combo! The old fried dough sticks are cut into bite-sized pieces, soaked in the rich sesame broth inside the clay pot. The outside turns slightly soft while the center stays crispy, and they burst with juice when bitten—truly addictive!
The other bowl we ordered was rice noodles. Their texture is softer and more refreshing compared to the potato noodles. They absorb the broth well and have their own distinct appeal.
The fried pork tenderloin skewers have a crispy exterior while the meat inside remains tender, making them very moreish when eaten with a bit of seasoning powder.
The grilled rice cakes have a lightly charred aroma on the outside, with a chewy, springy texture and a sweet-savory sauce.
After eating, we returned to Wanxiang City for more shopping, then headed to Xiamen SM City Plaza to buy souvenirs and snacks. Walmart there is great for browsing—snail noodles, instant noodles, snacks, seasonings, and drinks are all available. If you want to bring local specialties home, definitely set aside some shopping time.
This unexpected find at Zao Xiang Kou Clay Pot Potato Noodles at the end of our Xiamen trip was one of the most memorable meals. The rich sesame broth paired with Q-elastic potato noodles is truly distinctive, and the fried pork skewers and grilled rice cakes were also excellent.
If you're planning to shop at Wanxiang City or stay nearby, we highly recommend trying this local specialty. It offers a fresh twist beyond regular noodles and lets you experience flavors different from those in Taiwan.
