Located in Fuxing District, Taoyuan City, Jiaobanshan Xingguan is a beautiful scenic spot that carries historical memories and natural scenery. The choice of this location stems from the late President Chiang Kai-shek's appreciation of the similarity between the landscape here and his hometown of Xikou in Fenghua, Zhejiang. Chiang Ching-kuo also fondly recorded in his writings the warm moments of appreciating plum blossoms and gazing at the Xikou landforms together with his father. Today, Jiaobanshan Xingguan not only carefully preserves precious nostalgic artifacts from the Chiang era but also integrates modern technology and art, offering visitors a unique journey through time and space.
The main exhibition theme inside Jiaobanshan Xingguan focuses on “Chiang’s Travelogue,” recounting the stories of Chiang Kai-shek and his wife Soong Mei-ling during their visits and sightseeing at Jiaobanshan. The exhibition particularly presents the process of Soong Mei-ling learning to paint and creating watercolors. Historical photos on display, such as the couple in the bamboo pavilion at Jiaobanshan and their outing by the Jiaobanshan suspension bridge, vividly depict their daily life.
The “Aerial View of Jiaobanshan” inside the lodge provides a new perspective on Jiaobanshan through a simulated bird’s-eye flight view. This perspective guides people to gain a deeper understanding of the rich local natural environment, the distribution and species of wildlife, and further connects the view to the important camphor tree resources and the history of camphor production derived from them. Through vivid imagery and animated narratives, viewers can explore the historical context and ecological value of Jiaobanshan from multiple aspects including environment, industry, and natural ecology.
From the front of Jiaobanshan Xingguan, following a small path leads to Siquin Pavilion. This pavilion was once the best vantage point for Chiang Kai-shek and his wife to stop and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Xikou terrace. However, due to the Hualien earthquake on April 3, 2024, parts of Siquin Pavilion’s structure were damaged, and there are currently safety concerns, so it is temporarily closed to the public.
Even though Siquin Pavilion is temporarily closed, visitors can still stop at the newly built scenic platform beside it. It offers an excellent view overlooking the meandering Dahan River threading through the magnificent mountains, with its vast and beautiful natural scenery still refreshing the mind and spirit.
The ecological environment around the Jiaobanshan Xingguan area is equally rich and diverse, with various mid- and low-altitude mountain birds often seen flying freely among the trees. During observation nearby, we were fortunate to spot the Taiwan blue magpie, known as the “Long-tailed Mountain Maiden,” named for its long tail feathers that account for about two-thirds of its body length. It features a bright red beak and claws, a striking black head and neck, and most of its body covered in vivid blue feathers.
Taoyuan Jiaobanshan Park is adorned with several creative artworks, two of which are located around Jiaobanshan Xingguan, adding an artistic atmosphere to the area.
The first is “Human-shaped Fox” created by artist Wu Xuan-san. This work uses red, white, and black totem-covered pillars symbolizing nature’s spokesperson, telling the mysterious story of the primeval forest and implying passion, peace, and strength. The piece anthropomorphizes the fox, viewing it as a spirit of the forest, conveying the idea that life should be as free and unrestrained as a fox roaming between heaven and earth.
The other is “China Imagery” created by French artist Guy de Rougemont. This work uses metal materials and, through its unique artistic language, displays rich colors and lines full of dynamism, vitality, and transparency, bringing an international artistic perspective to the Jiaobanshan Xingguan area. Together, these two artworks enrich the artistic and cultural内涵 of Jiaobanshan Xingguan, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the contemporary art atmosphere while appreciating natural scenery and historical relics.
